A couple quick hitters that happened over the weekend:
- Former Georgia Tech head coach Paul Hewitt will be coaching the George Mason Patriots next year after long-time coach Jim Larranaga left for Miami. This is kind of a strange choice for Mason. Yea, Hewitt had moderate success at mid-major Siena to start his career, but he has produced some horrendous teams at Georgia Tech these past few years despite having some serious NBA talent that he recruited to Atlanta. Hewitt is pretty young still (47), but that’s about it. Unless you prefer recruiting rankings as opposed to actual rankings.
- God’s Gift Achiuwa committed to Steve Lavin and St. John’s giving the Red Storm the 9th member of their 2011 recruiting class (really, a nine person class?). God’s Gift. GOD’S GIFT?!? Voting is officially closed for next year’s All-Name team MVP. Actually this might be the best name in college basketball history. Other contenders to be consider: Georgetown’s Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje, Providence’s God Shamgod, and Alabama State’s Chief Kickingstallionsims. I think all basketball fans are anticipating Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery’s first chance to call a St. John’s next game.
