Daily Dagger 4/16

Today’s Daily Dagger took place in the 1998  NCAA Tournament between second-seeded UConn against eleventh-seeded Washington. Down by one point with ten seconds left in the game, Connecticut put the ball in the hands of their leader and best player, Richard “Rip” Hamilton. One miss two miss, third times a charm! After misses by Jake Voskuhl and Hamilton, the ball was tipped right back to ‘Rip” and he hit a fade away jumper right as time expired.  Through out  all of this chaos, CBS’s Sean McDonough adds to the ultimate drama with his epic call of HAMILTON! The UConn Huskies took down the other Huskies that evening 74-73, with no time left on the clock.  It was nuts, check it out. HAMILTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew this day was coming. I was 12 at the time and this was seriously one of the hardest losses I’ve ever taken as a fan. UConn would break our hearts 8 years later in 2005 in another epic game in DC. UConn got some timely help from the officials in that game as well as complete daggers from Rashad Anderson. They beat us in the Sweet 16, then choked against GMU in the elite 8. To this day I’m convinced UW doesn’t lose to George Mason under the leadership of Brandon Roy. Coulda shoulda woulda, the life of a UW Basketball fan.

This dagger is an absolute classic though and definitely deserving of the feature.
